Empowering Women’s Leadership in Emergency (WLiE) in Afar

We are excited to share the success of our recent training sessions under the project “Empowering Women’s Leadership in Emergency (WLiE) for Inclusive Peace, Security, and Recovery in Afar,” in partnership with #CARE Ethiopia supported by the #UKAID.

Over the course of five impactful days from July 8 to July 13, 2025, we engaged 60 remarkable women from the WLiE groups in #Erebti and #Ab’ala. The training included peer-to-peer learning sessions and focused on thought articulation and communication skills.

In both Erebti and Ab’ala, the programs were inaugurated with inspiring speeches from guest representatives of the districts’ Women and Children Office, Peace and Security Office, and Communication Affairs Office. The respected guests highlighted the critical role of women’s leadership in fostering peace and security, emphasizing such training sessions are vital in enhancing women’s ability to articulate their thoughts and engage meaningfully in community discussions.

The sessions aimed to empower women to confidently express their thoughts, advocate for their rights and actively engage in community decision-making processes. The training emphasized building self-confidence and effective communication, enabling participants to break cultural barriers that often silence their voices.

The training sessions were dynamic and interactive, allowing participants to practice their new skills in real-time and express their thoughts clearly and assertively. Women shared personal stories, collaborated in group discussions, and participated in role-playing exercises that emphasized effective communication.

This program is crucial as it addresses the underrepresentation of women in crisis decision-making. By empowering women to take leadership roles and aim’s to foster inclusive solutions that benefit our communities.
